Mobile Learning Boot Camp

Twitter provides me with many benefits, one of which is a forecast of events that are taking place that I might be be interested in. Several days ago I picked up Tweet from @James Clay, who was conducting a Mobile Learning Boot Camp. One email later and I was buying my train ticket to Gloucester. I was a little reticent over attending the event as I work in neither HE, FE nor a work-based learning provider; I do however work for an organisation that delivers an incredible amount of training due to compliance and regulatory driven needs. Upon arrival at the College my rather tenuous attendance was greatly reinforced by seeing a National Skills Academy Nuclear plaque on the wall in the foyer…

what better justification behind attending (at least that’s what I convinced myself).

The day kicked off with James explaining that we would be looking at some current and emerging mobile technologies, before creating some content for ourselves. He even offered a tour of the college to view the approach that they had taken to implementing learning technologies. We then went on to review a whole host of mobile technologies. Of particular interest to me was an application called audioBoo and Posterous. I hope to introduce these free tools to my organisation as a small step towards implementing podcasting and blog. My first attempt at an audioBoo can be heard here.

http://audioboo.fm/boos/149575-you-ve-got-to-listen-to-this

I hadn’t expected to be asked to create my own content during the day, so I hurriedly decided to put together a short movie using my Flip HD camera that I would then push out to my colleagues via YouTube in the hope that it might spark their interest in using mobile technologies to enhance the learning events they deliver. The whole movie took approx 10 minutes to film and put together and probably the same time again to upload and publish. All from a network and Flip camera – very mobile!

Whilst the ‘technical’ side of the day was extremely useful, for me the overall impression  that the day left me with was one of concern over how disconnected my organisation is in terms of utilising technology (let alone mobile technology) for learning activities. This concern has led me to commit to the following when I return to work next week:

Provide feedback to relevant personnel as to the ‘disconnect’ that people would experience when leaving a college such as Gloucester and entering our workplace, in specific relation to the learning tools/materials/environment that are (un)available.Liaise with our IT Department as my organisation will shortly be purchasing new phone handsets for all employees and I hope to be able to convince them to consider additional functionality beyond just ‘making calls’.Push the YouTube video (above) out to our internal Learning Facilitators in the hope that they will consider a greater use of technology (mobile or otherwise) within their learning events.Investigate and promote the use of QR codes around my organisation.

All in all, another great learning experience which will undoubtedly add to my effectiveness within my new role as a Learning Technologist and once again… Cheers James!

Learning & Development Consultant

Learning & Development Consultant Gatwick

The role

Reporting to the Head of Learning & Talent Development (L&TD), the main responsibility of the L&TD Consultant is to take accountability for the content of all leadership, management and general development programmes offered by the CAA to its employees. The role will entail providing thought leadership about the content of the programmes and managing external third party providers who are contracted to design and deliver programmes. This relationship-based role also involves the post-holder in proactively gathering and managing course feedback from delegates to ensure programme content is appropriate, relevant and meeting the current and evolving development needs of the organisation.  For example, the move to a new performance management process will require line manager training which will need to be delivered in a timely and cost-effective way.

As the wider HR function moves to a more customer-centric model, a critical element of this L&TD role will be to develop strong relationships with the HR Business Partners and their business groups to understand the CAA’s development requirements at different management levels. This will include the requirement for the post-holder to provide L&TD Consultancy services to the wider CAA to help managers and colleagues identify the most appropriate solution to their identified development needs, for both individual and team development issues.

At present, the L&TD function is a green-field site with a broad suite of L&TD programmes being designed and delivered to the CAA for the first time.  Alongside these new initiatives are a range of legacy programmes and a devolved L&D function. Historically, there has also been a lack of investment in IT systems, a situation which is being remedied over the next 12 months.

The successful candidate will have an enthusiasm for influencing and shaping a new L&TD function for the CAA. There is an ambitious transformation programme running in the CAA which will be implemented over the next 4 years which will create a more efficient organisation.  The HR and L&TD transformation is part of this programme and offers an exciting professional opportunity for the right candidate to help mould and influence the shape of the future L&TD provision for the CAA.

A key project over the next 9 months will to manage the upgrading, implementation and configuration of our Learning Management System (LMS) - Net Dimensions Talent Suite. This will impact on the performance management process (which will need to be reconfigured) and provide increased end-user access to our LMS. The successful candidate will have experience of similar LMS projects.

The L&D team is supported by the L&TD Coordinator who has responsibility for all logistical and administrative arrangements for the calendar of programmes.

The ideal candidate

Strong technical competence in Learning and Development from working within an established L&D function, preferably from set up, but this is not essential.Exposure to a professional services or similar high intellect environment and/or supporting the development needs of more technically orientated individuals would be an advantage.Previous experience of translating employee development needs into learning activities, proactively managing third party providers to design relevant materials and formats.Strong project management skills to manage multiple activities to deadlines and budgets.Experience of the management of LMS systems and their ongoing maintenance and improvementExperience of working in a multi-site environment.Strong communication and relationship building skills.Resilience, flexibility and innovation to find solutions in the (current) absence of joined-up systems and the change management skills to transform along with the function.High degree of personal organisation to handle a wide remit of activity.Must be flexible to travel between the Gatwick and London offices.

In addition to a highly competitive salary that matches your experience, you can expect a wide range of benefits, including pension, generous annual leave allowance and discounted private medical and dental insurance.

Closing date: Tuesday 25 November

Learning Beyond the Course (eLN event)

Once again I have been lucky enough to attend a fantastic CPD event in the shape of todays eLN event – Learning Beyond the Course.

@RobHubbard was our compère for the day, decked out as usual in a gloriously flowery shirt

IMAG0018

(where do you get them from Rob?)

In line with my previous Blog post ‘Small Chunks‘ I was committed to taking away 1 Action Planning point per session that I could actually do something with back in my organisation.

Here we go…

Ben Betts – And Now For Something Completely Different…

If you’ve ever wondered what you can do with a paper clip, a stick, some constraint and a carrot then you’ll be gutted that you missed Ben’s session. But ‘cos he’s a good bloke he’s blogged about it in some detail here.

Which leads me to my action planning point(s)

Try and sweet-talk Ben into sending me the game that he kicked his session off with (very clever and innovative)Read Daniel Pink’s Drive (Ben referenced this several times and as we have it sat in our library it makes sense to have a look)

Graeme Duncan – Breaking Down Barriers: The Ubiquitous Delivery of Thin Client Immersive Simulations

I’ll be the first to admit that the title of this session was more than a little off-putting when I read about this event on the eLN website, but once I realised that we were going to be ‘virtually’ running around a Type 22 RN frigate, putting out fires and catching saboteurs I was hooked! It was certainly enlightening  to hear that Caspian Learning have been creating some realistic virtual environments for some VERY security-conscious clients…. interesting…

Log into Thinking Worlds and request a demoInvite Graeme into my organisation to demo Thinking Worlds.

Ed Stonestreet – Not eLearning

Ed reminded us that the elearning industry is worth $10bn and is almost without exception dull, dry and academic. As I work within a highly-regulated Industry I could certainly relate to Ed’s point that it is focussed on those who have a mandate to learn, those who need to tick a box. Apparently only 20% of any audience is motivated and inspired to act, the other 80% may have a latent interest but they need to be engaged, entertained and wowed in order to get them to participate. How can this be done….? Well Ed went on to explain in not so many words the Affective Context model, which I aren’t going to attempt to explain here, instead I’ll direct you towards Nick Shackleton-Jones blog.

Ed made such a good job of raising the issue of ‘engagement’ and ‘interest raising’ that I am going to direct our internal Learning Facilitators towards the Affective Context model video.Review the YooDoo tool that Ed is involved in.

Rob had promised us an excellent lunch and Holborn Bars certainly didn’t disappoint!!!

Following lunch we had 3 great Pecha Kucha presentations, I’ve come to realise that these appear to be a staple element of an eLN event and I look forward to seeing them; who knows I may even present one at the November event (if anybody from the eLN board is reading this, that wasn’t a formal commitment!)

Jane Hart – Transforming Workplace Learning with Social Media

Jane Hart – Transforming Workplace Learning with Social Media

It was great to see Jane Hart again after lunch as the last time we met was at a Twitter workshop that she ran back in the Spring at the Informatology conference. Jane (as always) did a great job of proving the power of Twitter as a crowd-sourcing tool by calling upon her Twitter followers to respond to various questions that she was ‘auto-tweeting’ during her presentation. I was quite surprised to discover how few people in the immediate audience were Twitter users, although this is a pattern that I have noticed emerging at the IITT conference and the eLN showcase…. I wonder why….?

Patrick Fitzpatrick – Living in a World Without ‘Click Next to Continue’

Patrick addressed an issue that I have been working on for sometime in my organisation which is “how can my learners progress through a piece of elearning’ without a next button on the screen. He had some great examples of using visuals to act as menu screens, which mirrors an approach I have taken with a Display Screen Equipment awareness package.  This visual approach seemed to split the audience into 2 groups; those that ‘got it’ and those that thought that introducing a ‘fun’, visual component was a distraction and on some occasions set a false impression of how dull, boring and repetitive working life can be :-(

Patrick made a great reference to the level of elearning interaction over the years:

Yesterdays elearning = dictationTodays elearning = investigationTomorrows elearning = exploration (hopefully!)

So what were my action planning points?

Continue the work I am doing on removing the next button from my elearning module and then…publicise this to the remaining elearning authors to show them that it ‘is’ possible.

Throughout the day the entire conference had taken the form of a crossword/wordsearch/game of battleships which I thought was really innovative and brought an interesting element to the event, my only concern with taking this approach was that I (and perhaps my learners) would be so distracted by the gaming element that the learning could suffer… not something I’m instantly dismissing though, and as with the rest of the day has provided food for thought….
